Today anyone can do research ! (2018)
Hack Low Cost High Tech to DIY research“ is a project in gestation at the CRI Motion Lab. It is based on an alliance between science and design. Science brings objectivity, scientific method and critical thinking. Design brings out of real/virtual individual/collective interactive interfaces, devices, situations and scenarios and critical thinking. Anybody is offered the benefice of technologically enhanced individual intuition and perception to enter objective and shareable knowledge through research projects. The CRI energizes this fruitful but difficult dialogue: it emphasizes empathy in design and promotes science through research as a tremendously powerful vehicle for anyone to enter, to learn in and to build the world coming.

DeSciTech ANR program 2014-2018

The ANR-funded Descitech research program is the fruit of collaboration between CIME Nanotech (Université Joseph Fourier, Grenoble), the ENSCI-Les Ateliers design school (Paris), the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides (Université Paris Sud, CNRS, Orsay), the CoDesign-Lab (Télécom ParisTech), and the Institut de Recherche en Gestion (Université Paris-Est Créteil).

The Descitech project explores how an alliance between Science and Design can open up new avenues for the formulation and appropriation of scientific knowledge by the various players in society. To achieve this, the project is organized around the confrontation of design disciplines (design and engineering), hard science disciplines (physics), and humanities and social science disciplines. The three disciplines adopt a reflexive stance on the ways in which they express scientific data. This reflexive posture is made possible by the creation of specific fields that enable researchers to experiment and observe approaches on the basis of common projects.

The assumption is that designers and scientists, combining their creative process, contribute to an objectification of the activity of symbolization and thus operate at a higher power of innovation. This assumption is rooted in the idea that the activity of symbolization precedes and organizes the activity of knowledge. Thus we come to consider the actors involved as « makers of the world”, using multiple and varied ways of meaning making.  Complete text in The making of contemporary worlds
